The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.9news.com\/rss\/story.aspx?storyid=283117\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">western United States<\/a> (which has been <a href=\"https:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/projects\/npp\/blog\/index.php\/uncategorized\/a-wild-week-of-wildfires\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">burning<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/projects\/npp\/blog\/index.php\/uncategorized\/the-hewlett-fire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/projects\/npp\/blog\/index.php\/uncategorized\/timelapse-of-the-lower-north-fork-fire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/projects\/npp\/blog\/index.php\/uncategorized\/i-and-m-band-views-of-the-heartstrong-fire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">time<\/a>). And now, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-19154168\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Canary Islands<\/a>. The Spanish islands have been under a drought, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/news\/world\/spanish-wildfires-spreading\/story-e6frg6so-1226449560833\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as has much of Spain<\/a>. (As an indication of how dry it has been, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/world\/morocco-sends-planes-to-fight-spanish-island-fire-1.913400\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one fire in mainland Spain<\/a> was started by someone flicking a cigarette butt out of their car window in a traffic jam &#8211; a fire that ultimately led to two deaths.) Back in July, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-18897287\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fires got started on Tenerife<\/a> &#8211; a major resort destination &#8211; and earlier this month, fires began on La Palma and La Gomera. You can also see what looks like a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/projects\/npp\/blog\/index.php\/uncategorized\/cape-verde-waves-and-plumes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">von K\u00e1rm\u00e1n vortex street<\/a> downwind of La Palma. That&#8217;s the west coast of Africa in the lower-right corner of the image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/projects\/npp\/blog\/index.php\/uncategorized\/fires-near-the-coldest-city-on-earth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">As discussed previously<\/a>, the true color RGB composite is better for viewing the smoke plume, but you can&#8217;t actually see the fire directly. Garajonay National Park is home to one of the last remaining <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laurisilva\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">laurisilva<\/a> forests, which has been around for 11 million years. The fire on La Gomera covers a significant percentage of the island. The yellow arrow points to Lanzarote, which, for some reason, is not part of IDL&#8217;s map. On the night this image was taken, the moon was approximately 84% full, so you can see a number of clouds as well the city lights from the major resort areas of the Canary Islands. The biggest visible city in Africa is <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laayoune\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">El Aai\u00fan<\/a>, the disputed capital of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Western_Sahara\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Western Sahara<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, here&#8217;s the &#8220;pseudo-true color&#8221; composite of VIIRS channels I-01 (0.64 \u00b5m), I-02 (0.87 \u00b5m) and I-03 (1.61 \u00b5m) from 13:42 UTC 6 August 2012.
