Notes:

NHC Satellite Proving Ground Review: 2015 NHC Satellite Proving Ground post-season meeting was held at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) on 27 January 2016. Andrea Schumacher was one of the meeting organizers. She participated on-site, and presented two talks: “Overview of 2015 NHC PG Activities” and “Uses of SRSO Imagery at NHC.” Galina Chirokova provided multiple examples of the three products that are currently being developed as part of the JPSS PG TC project: the moisture flux application, the eye-detection applications, and the VIIRS TC-centered DNB imagery.

Visit from Jason Burks from NASA/SPoRT and Ken Sperow from NOAA/MDL: Jason Burks from NASA/SPoRT and Ken Sperow from NOAA/MDLvisited RAMMB/CIRA from 2-5 February 2016. While at CIRA, Jason and Ken worked with D. Molenar and S. Longmore on several joint AWIPS2 projects. The group successfully built and installed an experimental version of AWIPS2 from the NOAA Virtual Lab (VLAB) code repositories. The accomplishment is significant in that it allows developers outside of NWS to build advanced versions of AWIPS2 before NWS release, allowing RAMMB/CIRA staff to test AWIPS2 applications prior to NWS deployment, thus providing better support to NWS field partners.

The group also successfully retrieved the AWIPS II 16.2.1 software from the VLAB repository, and built the RPMs with the VLAB build-applications-with-python (BAP) within a Docker container. The AWIPS2 II RPMs were then installed in the main system. Docker is an open-source project that automates the deployment of applications inside software ‘containers’. With Docker, software developers can develop, ship, and run any application from a lightweight, portable, self-sufficient container that can run virtually anywhere. The use of Docker will significantly simplify application sharing, application porting from research to operations, and maintenance of multiple working environments on a single workstation. S. Longmore is currently writing comprehensive documentation for installing Docker, and utilizing BAP to install AWIPS II within a Docker container incorporating existing documentation for Matt Foster, Ken Sperow, and Jason Burks.

The group also developed a work plan for the upcoming AWIPS2 Experimental Products Development Team training session that will be held at SPoRT in March 2016. (D. Molenar, S. Longmore)

Daniel Nietfeld Visit: Daniel Nietfeld, the GOES-R Deputy Team Lead for Product Readiness & Operations (PRO), visited CIRA on Friday 22 January 2016. A number of topics were discussed, including plans for 1-minute mesoscale sector selection by the NWS with GOES-R, RGBs in AWIPS-2, and plans for GOES-R Training for the NWS. (D. Lindsey, D. Molenar, D. Bikos, S. Miller, B. Connell, and J. Torres)
