The dust storm initiated due to dry and and very windy conditions, originating from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Great+Sand+Dunes+National+Park+and+Preserve\/@37.7915959,-105.5943276,11z\/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0x33d7918ad00f83d9?sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwiEn7_N7cTaAhUNcq0KHf7WCugQ_BIItQEwEA\">Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve<\/a>, near <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Alamosa,+CO+81101\/@37.7154657,-105.7259392,9.58z\/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x87167bf536a13e75:0xdeea62120ecf8bec!8m2!3d37.4694491!4d-105.8700214\">Alamosa, Colorado<\/a>. Throughout the afternoon, visibility was quite low, in portions of the state.<\/p>\n<p>Check out the surface observations (via <a href=\"http:\/\/weather.rap.ucar.edu\/surface\/\">RAP Real-Time Weather<\/a>), between 16-22Z, 17 April 2018. Over time, notice the dollar sign and infinity weather symbols, depicting dust and haze in central and eastern Colorado.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2163\" src=\"https:\/\/rammb2.cira.colostate.edu\/visit-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/04\/sfc_obs_animation_v2.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"680\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The dust storm was also seen via satellite by the Suomi-National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) at 1843Z and 2026Z, 17 April 2018. Below are two satellite products observing the atmospheric phenomena.<\/p>\n<p><strong>VIIRS True Color Product (via\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/ramsdis\/online\/npp_viirs_conus.asp\">RAMSDIS Online<\/a>) from S-NPP.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Notice the &#8216;light, milky brown&#8217; feature, emanate from south-central Colorado, where the Great American Sand Dunes reside.
