{"id":84,"date":"2008-05-01T14:26:56","date_gmt":"2008-05-01T20:26:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/visit\/blog\/index.php\/2008\/05\/01\/great-knowledgepaperstraining-that-you-may-have-missed\/"},"modified":"2026-05-19T11:31:46","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T17:31:46","slug":"great-knowledgepaperstraining-that-you-may-have-missed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rammb2.cira.colostate.edu\/visit-blog\/2008\/05\/01\/great-knowledgepaperstraining-that-you-may-have-missed\/","title":{"rendered":"Some Great Knowledge, Papers, and Training Materials That You May Have Missed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jeff Braun<\/p>\n<p>Below are some links to, or copies of, some perhaps lesser known meteorological training materials.\u00a0 Many of these have been born out of Aviation Weather programs either here in the USA through the military Air Force Weather Agency (AFWA) or the FAA, or from up north and our Canadian Neighbors.\u00a0 Although some of the information is based on region specific examples, all of it (the principles, etc.) can be applied to most of our own geographic areas.<\/p>\n<p>First up is a link to NAV Canada, a privately run non-profit organization that operates Canada&#8217;s Civil Air Navigation Service.\u00a0 This section contains\u00a0an in depth training manuals section that is broken into\u00a0six geographic regions\u00a0that cover the whole of Canada.\u00a0 Truly indispensable stuff here for all but tropical forecasters: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.navcanada.ca\/NavCanada.asp?Language=en&amp;Content=ContentDefinitionFiles\\Publications\\LAK\\default.xml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NAV Canada Maunuals<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next up is the Air Force Weather Agency&#8217;s &#8220;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/rammb2.cira.colostate.edu\/visit-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/05\/Meteorological_Techniques.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meteorological Techniques<\/a><\/em>&#8221; which is an in depth compilation of many various weather forecasting parameters and techniques.\u00a0 It is another truly indispensable item to be used for review, support, rules of thumb (tricks of the trade).\u00a0 \u00a0Also by AFWA,\u00a0great training, practice, and supplemental review is the manual of the <a href=\"https:\/\/rammb2.cira.colostate.edu\/visit-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/05\/mesoscale_forecast_process.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mesoscale Forecast Process<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This paper by John Mecikalski and Kristopher Bedka titled, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/rammb2.cira.colostate.edu\/visit-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/05\/Forecast_CI_GOES.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Forecasting Convective Initiation by Monitoring the Eveolution of Moving Cumulus in Daytime GOES Imagery<\/a>&#8221;
