{"id":92,"date":"2008-07-15T09:28:13","date_gmt":"2008-07-15T15:28:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/visit\/blog\/index.php\/2008\/07\/15\/experimental-tropical-cyclone-formation-probability-product-tcfp\/"},"modified":"2026-05-12T06:13:22","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T12:13:22","slug":"experimental-tropical-cyclone-formation-probability-product-tcfp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rammb2.cira.colostate.edu\/visit-blog\/2008\/07\/15\/experimental-tropical-cyclone-formation-probability-product-tcfp\/","title":{"rendered":"(Experimental) Tropical Cyclone Formation Probability Product (TCFP)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rammb2.cira.colostate.edu\/visit-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/07\/mainrfpa.gif\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/rammb2.cira.colostate.edu\/visit-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/07\/mainrfpa.gif\" alt=\"TC Formation Probability percent July 15 2008 06z\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a title=\"mainrfpa.gif\" href=\"https:\/\/rammb2.cira.colostate.edu\/visit-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/07\/mainrfpa.gif\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeff Braun<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the main portion of <strong>Tropical Cyclone Season<\/strong> still around the corner (it&#8217;s slowly winding up), we thought we&#8217;d point you to the next&nbsp;generation of the operational TCFP product at:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rammb-data.cira.colostate.edu\/tcfp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/rammb-data.cira.colostate.edu\/tcfp\/<\/a>.&nbsp; New features include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman\">Extended domain<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman\">: The product has been extended to cover the Northern Hemisphere Central and West Pacific tropical cyclone basins. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman\">\u2022 <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman\">Additional geostationary satellite coverage<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman\">: Water vapor imagery from GOES-West is now used for the East Pacific (replacing GOES-East used in prior product) basin and MTSAT-1R is used for the West Pacific basin.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman\">\u2022 <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman\">Web site format<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman\">: Each basin has its own web page displaying the xy contour plots of real-time, climatological and anomaly TC formation probability and input parameter values, as well as time-series over sub-basins. A front page to the website has been added that contains: <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier New\">1. <span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman\">Full-domain contour plot of real-time TC formation probability. 2. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman\">24-hour water vapor imagery loop over full domain. 3. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman\">TC Formation Potential plot. 4. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman\">Links to individual basin web pages. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman\">\u2022New input parameter<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman\">: 850-hPa horizontal divergence was added as an input parameter. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman\">\u2022 <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman\">Updated algorithm<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman\">: Two years (2004 &amp; 2005) were added to the development dataset and the product algorithm was redeveloped over each of the main basins (Atlantic, East Pacific and West Pacific) independently.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman\">\u2022<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman\">96 hour loops of TC formation probability<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman\">: Loops have been extended from 24-hour to 96-hour and are available for each basin.
