Credit: NOAA\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jeff Braun<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Volcanoes, particularly volcanic ash, are major concerns to many of us in meteorology.&nbsp; While the physical presence of the mountain and the energy expended during an eruption can be quite enormous, dangerous, and&nbsp;both life and property threating,&nbsp; the atmospheric discharge of ash can also be a major hazard to&nbsp;aviation&nbsp;as well as the local health communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The recent eruption of Okmok (<a href=\"http:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/visit\/AniS\/okmok\/Vis_Loop1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1st eruption &#8211; July 12)<\/a> volcano in the Alaskan Aleutian Islands has garnered some recent press in the USA which started as recently as July 12, 2008 (see photo above &#8211; courtesy NOAA).&nbsp; Days later (July 17th) part of the plume was seen coming into our own Pacific Northwest (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/blog\/archives\/694\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CIMMS blog<\/a>).&nbsp; However, there have been many other important eruptions around the world which have&nbsp;already impacted the lives of many and continue threaten many more.&nbsp; The Chaitin Volcano in Chili is a good example (<a href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/news\/2008\/05\/photogalleries\/volcano-photos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">see photos from National Geographic here<\/a>). &nbsp;Below are links to many of the volcano centers around the world, including their most recent and active volcanoes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/aawu.arh.noaa.gov\/vaac.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anchorage Volcanic Ash Advisory Center<\/a> (Okmok &#8211; Alaska, USA);&nbsp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smn.gov.ar\/?mod=vaac&amp;id=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Buenos Aires VAAC<\/a> (Ubinas &#8211; Peru); <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/info\/vaac\/advisories.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Darwin VAAC <\/a>(Rabaul &#8211; New Britain); <a href=\"http:\/\/ds.data.jma.go.jp\/svd\/vaac\/data\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tokyo VAAC<\/a> (Sakurajima &#8211; Japan); <a href=\"http:\/\/www.meteo.fr\/aeroweb\/info\/vaac\/homepage\/eindex.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Toulouse VAAC<\/a> (Sete Cidades &#8211;
