2025 Taiwan-US Workshop on AI/ML for Satellite Data, Severe Weather, and Tropical Cyclones at CIRA

CIRA co-organized the 2025 Taiwan-US Workshop on AI/ML for Satellite Data, Severe Weather, and Tropical Cyclones that took place at NCAR in Boulder (April 15–16) and at CSU/CIRA in Fort Collins (April 17). The workshop brought together scientists from Taiwan and the United States to advance the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in atmospheric sciences. Discussions emphasized challenges and progress in data-driven weather prediction (DWP), particularly for high-resolution forecasts of tropical cyclones, convective systems, and storm-radiation interactions. The workshop showcased cutting-edge work on integrating remote sensing data and reanalyses with AI/ML modeling, promoting collaboration across institutions including Central Weather Administration (CWA), National Taiwan University (NTU), NCAR, and CSU/ATS/CIRA. The event highlighted the enduring partnership between Taiwan and the U.S., aiming to foster future research in remote sensing, diagnostics, and weather-climate interface modeling through collaborative innovation. On the CSU side the workshop was organized by Hungjui Yu (lead; ATS/CIRA) and Imme Ebert-Uphoff (co-lead; CIRA) and Michael Bell (co-lead; ATS).  Numerous CIRA scientists presented their work, including Mark DeMaria, Kathy Haynes, Marie McGraw, and Kyle Hilburn (see schedule for topics), and Kate Musgrave and Imme Ebert-Uphoff served as moderators.
