During mid-May 2026, a fire ignited on Santa Rosa Island, that is located off the coast of southern California. Over the course of a week, the fire burned ~18,000 acres, scorching approximately 1/3 of the island’s surface area. A flare that was launched by a shipwrecked mariner caused the start of the fire.
