Detecting Low-level Thunderstorm Outflow Boundaries At Night Using GOES

Based on “Nighttime Detection of Low-level Thunderstorm Outflow Using a GOES Multispectral Image Product” by J. Dostalek et al

Introduction

This case reviews the use of the GOES imager channels to detect and monitor the evolution of LTO boundaries at night. LTO boundaries have been monitored for years using the high resolution visible channel during the day. With the advent of the 3.9 micron channel on the GOES-8, -9 and –10 imager instrument, it is now possible to use the fog/stratus product to monitor the LTO boundaries during the night.

The goal of this teletraining session is to review the use of the various GOES IR channels and products in monitoring LTO boundaries at night.
