Awards:

Steve Miller, Curtis Seaman, and Dan Lindsey were awarded the CO-LABS Governor’s Award for High-Impact Research. The award, which will be presented by Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper at a gala awards ceremony on October 5th, is the second such award that CIRA has won and highlights the important role CIRA has in the research community here in Colorado as well as nationally.

Kevin Micke was recognized with CIRA’s “2017 Exceptional Service Award” for his “Outstanding achievements in Pioneering the web application “Satellite Loop Interactive Data Explorer in Real-time (SLIDER).”

Kevin Micke was also awarded an Outstanding Information Technology and Engineering Employee of the Year Award for 2017 from NOAA/NESDIS, based on recommendations from of his colleagues at StAR. Kevin “demonstrated excellence in IT and Engineering by enabling the delivery of GOES-R satellite images to broadcasters, meteorologists, and the public during the 2017 hurricane season in real time.” Kevin was recognized at the 2017 NESDIS Awards Ceremony in November.

Visitors

Dave Jones: meteorologist with StormCenter Communications based in Maryland, visited CIRA on 12 December 2017 and gave a seminar. He was showcasing the software GeoCollaborate, an internet tool designed to facilitate the sharing of meteorological data and imagery with colleagues in different geographic locations. (D. Lindsey)

Jason Apke Visit: Jason Apke, a PhD student at the Univ. of Alabama-Huntsville, visited CIRA on 21 November 2017. Jason has done lots of work with 1-minute imagery from GOES-14 and associated atmospheric motion vectors, specifically looking at storm-top divergence and vorticity fields. Some of Jason’s work complements the research interest at CIRA and RAMMB. (S. Miller, D. Lindsey)
