Outstanding Science and Research Employee of 2018: Dan Lindsey was selected as the NESDIS Outstanding Science and Research Employee of 2018! This recognition is based on the recommendations of colleagues at the GOES-R Program Office, including Pam Sullivan. Dan was nominated “for assuming scientific ownership and rejuvenating the role of GOES-R Program lead scientist, and assuming scientific ownership in all aspects,” as well as emphasizing “user and public communications, by utilizing multiple forums to promote the new capabilities of GOES-R and hastening their adoption by NWS and private-sector forecasters.” (D. Major Kerrin Caldwell: Major Kerrin Caldwell, Chief of Weather Requirements and Resources located at Air Combat Command Headquarters (Langley Air Force Base, Virginia) visited CIRA on 18 December and presented a seminar titled “US Air Force Operational Weather Structure and The Meteorological Forecast Process.” She attended CIRA MetSat group meeting on aviation-related projects and research topics. South Korean Visitor: Major Hyekyong Kim is visiting CIRA/Fort Collins CO from the South Korea Air Force Weather Wing (1 August 2018 to 31 January 2019). The CIRA team helps her learn about GOES-16 ABI imagery and Level 2 products related to aviation weather applications. Currently, she is working on a satellite case study that deals with aircraft icing. (Y.-J. Noh, L. Grasso, R. Brummer)
KMA Visitors/Seminar: Chuyong Chung, Eunha Sohn (senior researchers at Korea Meteorological Administration/National Meteorological Satellite Center), and Sunghyun Nam (professor at Seoul National University, Korea) visited CIRA from 12-14 November 2018 and presented a seminar titled “Introduction on South Korean Meteorological Satellite Programs focusing on Geo-KOMPSAT-2A (GK-2A) applications” on 13 November 2018. They met with several CIRA researchers and discussed various research topics related to KMA’s new geostationary satellite GK-2A (launch scheduled on 5 December 2018), which include True Color/RGB imagery, cloud/dust/water vapor products, and hurricane forecast applications. Visit and Seminar from Dr. Jan Mandel of the University of Colorado – Denver: On 25 October 2018, Dr. Jan Mandel was hosted by Kyle Hilburn during a visit to CIRA from the University of Colorado – Denver. Dr. Mandel gave a seminar titled “A numerical framework for operational coupled fire-atmosphere-fuel-moisture-smoke forecasting.” The seminar was on recent work developing capabilities for WRF-SFIRE, the WRF model coupled with a fire-spread model. The model is configured with nested grids, the innermost being a refined 30-m grid. This allows for explicit representation of plume dynamics, rather than having to parameterize smoke injection heights, and the modeled plumes match well with observations. The talk stimulated many questions from the audience, and was a great complement to the seminar from Dr. David Peterson earlier in the week on pyrocumulonimbus clouds. During his visit, Dr. Mandel visited with individuals from both CIRA and the Mathematics Department at CSU including: Kyle Hilburn, Louie Grasso, James Liu, Yongcheng Zhou, and Wolfgang Bangerth. (K. Visit and Seminar from Dr. David Peterson of the US Naval Research Laboratory: On 23 October 2018, Dr. David Peterson was hosted by Jeremy Solbrig during a visit to CIRA from the US Naval Research Laboratory’s Marine Meteorology Division. Dr. Peterson gave a well-received seminar titled “Wildfire-Driven Thunderstorms Cause a Volcano-Like Stratospheric Injection of Smoke.” This seminar was on recent work that studies detection and characterization of pyrocumulonimbus clouds and the large impact they may have on stratospheric smoke and ash content. During his visit, Dr. Peterson visited with individuals and groups from both CIRA and ATS including: Steve Miller, Jeremy Solbrig, Kyle Hilburn, Jason Apke, Scott Longmore, Dan Lindsey, Louie Grasso, and Sue van den Heever and her research group. Dr. Yair Cohen of Caltech: J. Knaff met with Dr. Yair Cohen of Caltech. They discussed observed tropical cyclone outflow and how the special nature of hurricanes may be leading to outflowing winds far from gradient balance. Dr. Cohen was visiting CSU’s Department of Atmospheric Science and gave a special seminar on Monday15 October entitled “Gradient Non-Balance at the Outflow of Tropical Cyclones: Theory, Models and Observations.” (J.
