SUBJECT: Trip Report
Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA) Planning Meeting,
Leading Virtual and Remote Teams Training Session, ORA Team Leader Meeting
Camp Springs, MD
March 18-22, 2002

I traveled to Camp Springs, Maryland to attend a one-day planning meeting for the NESDIS contributions to the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA), a two-day training session entitled “Leading Virtual and Remote Teams,” and a one-day ORA Team Leader meeting. I also stayed for ½ day on Friday for my mid-year performance review and a few informal meetings.

At the JCSDA meeting, Milija Zupanski (CIRA) and I gave a briefing on satellite data assimilation experience and interests at CIRA. Tom Greenwald and Tomislava Vukicevic from CIRA also attended the meeting. Overviews of possible JCSDA contributions from the other NESDIS cooperative institutes and ORA were also summarized. The meeting accomplished the primary goal of helping define the ORA internal capabilities with regard to the JCSDA.

The two-day training session provided some valuable information on how to lead teams, with emphasis on working with groups comprised of local and remote people. The instructor worked very hard to make the material interesting, and hold the attention of the audience.

At the team leader meeting, Hank Drahos and I made a presentation on operational transition in the GIMPAP process. There was a related discussion of the new PSDI-proposal process and how that affects the work funded by GIMPAP in previous years. Science directions within ORA were described in a presentation led by Marie Colton, and Gerald Dittberner provided a summary of GOES-R planning.

Following the team leader meeting, I completed my mid-year review meeting and met with Naomi Surgi (NCEP) to discuss the status of the USWRP Joint Hurricane Testbed project for FY02. She told me that the funds for these projects should become available by June 1.
