D. Lindsey traveled to Florence, Italy, and Exeter, United Kingdom, on 2-12 April 2016 to attend a EUMETSAT-sponsored Convection Working Group Meeting, and to visit the UK Met Office. At the CWG Meeting, a 45-min presentation was given titled “Observing convection with the next generation of geostationary satellites: Himawari, GOES-R, and Meteosat Third Generation.” While visiting the Met Office, a 50-min seminar was given titled “Simulated Satellite Imagery: A Tool for Model Evaluation, Operational Cloud Forecasts, and Preparing for Future Satellites.” (D. NRL VISIT: Lewis Grasso visited the Naval Research Laboratory in Monterey, California the first week of June 2016. During his visit he continued collaborating with Drs. Yi and Hao Jin and Dr. Jason Nachamkin. A new collaboration was developed with Dr. Josh Cossuth. During his visit, Grasso gave an oral presentation. Dr. Grasso also participated in the JCSDA 14th Technical Review Meeting and Science Workshop on Satellite Data Assimilation, Moss Landing, CA. (L. Grasso, Y-J Noh, CIRA, and D. Lindsey)

Seoul Nation University visitor: Nan Sung Hyun, Professor at Seoul Nation University visited CIRA on 27 April. He met with J. Knaff to discuss KMA’s plans to make a three dimensional satellite-model-based wind analysis that will use techniques similar to Mueller et al. (2006) Demuth et al. (2006), and Knaff et al (2011) to create the tropical cyclone portion of the wind fields. The satellite components will thus include microwave, IR-proxy, cloud-feature-tracked, and scatterometry based winds. Dr. Hyun also met with D. Lindsey to discuss tracking of ocean internal waves and Y-J Noh to discuss her work with precipitation (J. Knaff, D. Lindsey, and Y.-J. Noh)
NESDIS Visitors: Greg Mandt, Steve Goodman, and Jaime Daniels visited RAMMB/CIRA on 25 April 2016 to participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to dedicate the new GOES-R antenna system at CIRA. The antenna was a cost-sharing project between NOAA and Colorado State University, and thus included Chris Kummerow (Director of CIRA), Jeff Collett (Department Head, Atmospheric Science), David McLean (Dean of Engineering), and Alan Rudolph (VP for Research). The antenna project was started in 2015, in anticipation of the GOES-R launch in October 2016. The visit included slide presentations by several of the principal project scientists who are benefitting from GOES-R funding directed to CIRA. Attendees were also invited to the daily weather discussion at CIRA which has been an ongoing event at RAMMB since the 1980s. (D. Hillger, D. Lindsey, D. Molenar, and J. Knaff)

NRLMRY Visitor: Jim Hansen, NRLMRY stopped by for coffee on June 30, his travel day. He was attending a cognitive learning workshop at CSU. He chatted informally about happenings at NRLMRY and the joint work CIRA and NRLMRY have planned at JTWC. (J. Knaff)
