Work for Former STAR Director: Dr. James Purdom, a former STAR Director and current Senior Scientist Emeritus at CIRA/CSU, visited RAMMB on 12 September 2018. Dr. Purdom and D. Molenar prepared 10 satellite case studies utilizing GOES-16, GOES-17 and Himawari-8 data from the RAMMB/CIRA archive. Results will be presented at the 9th Asia/Oceania Meteorological Satellite Users’ Conference (AOMSUC-9) in October 2018. The presentation, tentatively entitled “Out on a Limb,” includes cloud height and ozone layer views from the limb of Himawari-8 satellite imagery. (D. Molenar, D. Hillger)
JTWC Visitor: Captain Sean Zoufaly, Satellite Operations Flight Commander at the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, visited CIRA August 27–28 for a “technical exchange.” Topics of discussion included satellite products and tropical cyclone forecast guidance and their applications in the JTWC forecast process. These technical exchanges are important as they help researchers and product developers better understand how their products are used, what operational priorities are, and help direct future product development. Saiprasanth (Sai) Bhalachandran: Saiprasanth (Sai) Bhalachandran, Doctoral Candidate at Purdue University, visited with John Knaff the week of August 13th to discuss the influences of environmental forcing on tropical cyclone intensity changes, specifically the quantification of the stochastic behavior and what vortex scale parameters are independent of the environment. Sai is a PhD candidate advised by D. Chavas and co-advised by F. Marks (AOML/HRD). (J. Knaff)
Kevin Schrab: Kevin Schrab from NWS HQ visited CIRA on 6 August 2018. He was a CIRA researcher in the early 1990s before starting with the NWS. Kevin is currently a co-chair along with D. Lindsey on the GOES-17 ABI Science Options Team. (D. Lindsey, D. Hillger, S. Miller)
Major Hyekyong Kim: Major Kim is a visiting scientist from the South Korea Air Force Weather Wing who is visiting CIRA/Fort Collins from 1 August 2018 to 31 January 2019. Some of this time she will spend at NCAR in Boulder. Her research interests include aviation weather forecasting (icing and turbulence) and satellite data applications for aviation issues. Major Kim’s desk is in the CIRA Post Doc Office (Room # 18, Desk #6). Her supervisor is Yoo-Jeong Noh. (Y.-J. Noh, L. Grasso, R. Brummer)
Howie Bluestein Visit: Prof. Howie Bluestein (Univ. of Oklahoma) visited CIRA on 10 July 2018 to work on a case study comparing mobile Doppler radar data of a tornadic supercell in Kansas with GOES-16 ABI 1-minute data. (D. Lindsey, D. Bikos)
Mark DeMaria (NHC) visited CIRA: Mark DeMaria, Chief of Technology and Science Branch at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) visited CIRA on 3 July 2018. Mark met with CIRA Directors, RAMMB federal employees, and members of CIRA Tropical Cyclone Group.
