C3LOUD-Ex field campaign

The Colorado State University Convective CLoud Outflows and UpDrafts Experiment (C3LOUD-Ex), led by Sue van den Heever from the CSU Department of Atmospheric Science, was recently featured on the cover of January’s issue of the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS). The C3LOUD-Ex field campaign centered around innovative sampling of thunderstorm cold pools and updrafts using drones and radiosondes. The field campaign occurred in July 2016 and between May and June 2017; and involved CIRA postdoctoral scientists Peter Marinescu and Naufal Razin and NOAA STAR scientist Christopher Slocum. The cover shows drones equipped with meteorological sensors in a “Flying Curtain” formation to sample a cold pool ahead of an incoming storm.
