EGU presentation on Evaluation Needs of AI-based global weather prediction models

On Apr 15, 2024, Imme Ebert-Uphoff (CIRA), Jebb Stewart (NOAA), and Jacob Radford (CIRA, NOAA) gave a joint presentation (virtually) at the EGU General Assembly.  The talk was entitled A Research Agenda for the Evaluation of AI-Based Weather Forecasting Models.  This 30 min presentation was solicited and served as the kick-off talk for a series of oral and poster sessions on “Forecasting the Weather” at the meeting.  The talk discussed the many challenges that need to be addressed for AI-based weather forecasting models before they can be considered for operational use, including the need to establish the actual value of such models for forecasters.  It also highlighted recent activities by the community to address these challenges, with emphasis on recent activities at CIRA, NOAA-GSL and NOAA-PSL.  For more information, the presentation slides are available here.  (POC: I.
