NOAA/NASA 3D Winds Workshop

J. Apke gave a remote presentation at the NOAA/NASA Workshop on Space-based 3D Winds in College Park, MD on 19 Feb 2025 titled “Dense Optical Flow-based Passive Wind Retrieval from Geostationary Satellite Imagery: Lessons Learned from Four Years of Near-Real-Time Production,” which covered how we compute optical-flow-retrieval-based winds, how we selected the retrieval algorithm we use, where we find good and bad features to track, where retrieval density matters, and how temporal resolution matters to wind accuracy.  The lessons learned are designed to guide researchers as we develop 3D winds retrieval algorithms using GeoXO sounder datasets.  The workshop features a combination of experts from passive- and active-winds derivation from space-based platforms.
