Lecture on Tropical Cyclone Models in CSU/ATS Data-Driven Forecasting Class: M. DeMaria and K. Musgrave gave a lecture in Prof. Elizabeth Barnes’ and Russ Schumacher’s course on data-driven forecasting. They presented a history of statistical models used in National Hurricane Center operations and more recent work on the verification of tropical cyclone forecasts from Artificial Intelligence Weather Prediction (AIWP) models from 2023 northern hemisphere cases. About 30 students and faculty were in attendance. (POCs: Mark DeMaria, Mark.DeMaria@colostate.edu, and Kate Musgrave, Kate.Musgrave@colostate.edu). Funding STI/HFIP.
ER Science Sharing Webinar: J. Apke gave a webinar to the Eastern Region Headquarters and NWS Forecasters on the uses of OCTANE Optical Flow Products for Convection Warning Operations titled “Going with the Flow: An Introduction to the OCTANE Sandwich Products and Applications for Convection Nowcasting.” The presentation highlighted how CIRA-produced optical flow products can be used to infer wind profiles, identify convection initiation, and diagnose strong mature convection, and covered forecaster feedback from the 2023 and 2024 Hazardous Weather Testbeds.
