JPSS for Extratropical Transition
Extra-tropical transition:
- The storm structure change
- Storm size can increase dramatically
- Most often occurs north of ~ 40 N
- Can occur down to 20 N in the Atlantic
- On average there are ~ 15 TS-ETC per year in all global basins
- Storm type could significantly affect forecast, especially when occurring right before the landfall
- Changes in storm size and structure during ET are important for forecasting storm impatc (2012 Sandy, 2022 Nicole) and risk mitigation
JPSS data, including ATMS and VIIRS provide model-independent information that can be used to improve storm type classification.
